The opening chapters of Caretaker — meet the Keane family, the town of Littleton, and the manor on Farr Hill that seems to have been waiting for exactly the right family.

A scene from the full-cast audiobook — performed by a full cast and scored with original music. People tell us it plays like a film for your ears.

The story behind the story — the real New England house, and the real lamp-post, that started all of it.

Free, and you can leave anytime. We only write when we have something worth your minute.

THE STORY

The Keane family left Boston for a fresh start: a Tudor manor in the New Hampshire woods, with English gardens, a creek, endless forest — and a caretaker who comes with the house.

Then the house begins to show them things. Hidden rooms. Mirrors that remember. An intercom that listens a little too well. And a lamp-post that never, ever loses power.

Is the house trying to save this family — or is it after something of its own? Across three books the answer turns out to be older than the house itself…and we’ll let you decide which parts we made up.

Two of us wrote this, at our kitchen table, with no publisher behind us. Every reader who starts the series is the reason there was a book two.

ABOUT US

R.J. Halbert is Rhonda and Jason Halbert — a husband-and-wife team out of the music world who never planned to write a novel, and now have three.

We moved our family into an old New England house, found a lamp-post out front that had clearly been there far longer than the power lines, and started asking what if this place had a purpose of its own…

What came out was a cozy thriller: real chills, a warm heart, and nothing you’d have to skip past reading it with your kids.

Thank you for being curious enough to read this far. Your reading any of it at all still surprises us.

Listen to the whispers,

Rhonda & Jason
